It's been an unusual few days since Saturday. Although Othello has always been a quiet dog our house seems eerily quiet without him. I definitely feel the lack of his presence in our home--like something's missing. I keep expecting to see him lying in his favorite spot at the top of our entryway stairs, but he's not there. On Saturday the vet gave us a clay imprint of Othello's front paw as a little keepsake. They made it while prepping him with his IV in the back. I'm going to put this in a shadow box with his collar and a some pictures of Othello. He was an awesome family dog and he is dearly missed.
Two of Othello's dog pals, Rubee and Dudley, spent a long weekend with us. Othello was happy to see them Friday morning and the three of them had a good time playing in the backyard together. Like the rest of us, Othello enjoyed having his friends over to play and visit. He had a good last day with family and dog friends. He also got to see his little buddy, Bojangles. It was very helpful to us to have Rubee and Dudley here too. It was good to have dogs here to comfort us. Dudley is especially cuddlely and loving. He really seemed to know something was not right.
Fourteen years is a long time to have a dog as a pet. Othello was our first "kid" and part of our long term, much anticipated family plan for after graduate school--buy a house, get a dog, start having children. Othello was with us for the best and most tumultuous years (so far) of our married life--become homeowners and parents! Josh was very sad on Saturday, but he too found a lot of comfort in Rubee and Dudley. The little kids were quite sad when we first told them but they seem okay now. Life goes on. Some day I expect we will get another dog, but not anytime soon. I have Othello to thank for so many things in my life, one of which is blogging. I started my blog because of him and I expect I'll still be writing about him from time to time.

I'm so sorry that Othello is gone. I can just see him, laying on the back of some sofa in heaven, giving a bark now and then...just because. I'm so glad that Dudley and Rubee were able to offer some comfort. Dudley has a very sensitive heart and knows what to do for people who are sad. Talk about a natural therapy dog. He's available for "borrowing" any time.
You must've been reading my mind. I was wondering how you're doing. Has it been since August or longer? Well, you really did give him a good last year of life. I imagine you're glad you bore the old dog burdens as long as you did and that you knew when the time was right.
I mostly remember Othello as a puppy...all happy and frolicky in Knoxville. What a dog. Of course, that's pronounced dawg.
Cyber-hugs to you.
